Gensan celebrates Women’s Month

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (24 March 2015) – Women received free services during the Women's Month Celebration at the Oval Gymnasium.

The services, which included free pap smear, body mass index computation, free haircut, blood pressure taking, and legal consultation, were rendered by the city government and companies participating in the celebration.

Cristina Caparos, one of the women volunteers who offered free haircut service, said “women empowerment is being able to help your fellow women achieve beauty even in a simple way.”

“Hearing thank you from them made me feel my worth as a woman also,” she added.

The Women's Month which is celebrated every March is anchored on the International Women's Day Celebration. This event is to recognize women’s empowerment and their recognized role now in the society.

The City Population Management Office (CPMO) is the lead department for this event. They are partnered with the City Social Welfare and Development Office and other national offices.

Judith Janiola, acting department head of the CPMO, tapped the participation of the various women’s federation of the city to represent each of the 26 barangays where they belong.

“There was an overwhelming attendance from different barangays through the women federation in this celebration. This is the biggest attendance we had so far,” Janiola said.

“Women must be empowered especially in decision-making, as the battle cry of our theme dictates. We do not limit only for women’s concerns but so equally with men,” she added.

Meanwhile, City Mayor Ronnel Rivera already mandated the CPMO to pursue the formulation of gender and development policies.

"In this way," Mayor Rivera said, "we can uphold the welfare of women and other vulnerable sectors of the city."

Gensan builds memorial shrine for lost fishermen

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (24 March 2015) – Gensan, a city built by the fishing industry, honors the lives of over 300 fishermen who went missing at the height of typhoon Pablo in 2012 through a monument at Plaza Heneral Santos.

The monument, which is under construction, was initiated by Mayor Ronnel Rivera to pay tribute to these fishermen whose lives were lost at sea last December 2012.

Mayor Rivera, with Sangguniang Panlungsod approval, allotted more than P130,000 for the construction of the monument which faces Pendatun Avenue.

The mayor, together with City Councilor Shandee Llido-Pestano, conducted an ocular inspection of the site on March 18.

“We are trying to finish this shrine as soon as this March so that we can hold a ceremonial unveiling of this one together with the families of those missing fishermen,” Mayor Rivera said. He added the City Engineers Office is prioritizing the construction of the monument right now.

“We will make sure that we will improve our plaza since this is one of the recreational sites of Gensan. We want to make them comfortable and safe while they are here,” Mayor Rivera emphasized.

The monument is a part of the beautification efforts at Plaza Heneral Santos. Mayor Rivera said an additional P4 million would be allotted to improve the facilities of the park and repair existing structures.

The addition of more lights in the plaza will be also be prioritized in the budget.  (Gensan CPIO/ Ian John M. Lagare)

City Hall employees undergo medical-physical tests

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (24 March 2015) – Employees of City Hall have undergone their annual medical-physical examination which started last week as part of the wellness program.

City Mayor Ronnel Rivera earlier upgraded the health and wellness benefits of city employees with the aim of keeping a healthy workforce that can better serve the people.

According to the mayor, the physical well-being of employees has a significant impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of the delivery of public service.

The mandatory tests included blood collection, taking of vital signs, optical exams, chest X-ray, urine and stool exams, and exclusive male and female check-ups.

“All are required to undergo medical-physical examination except those who have already undergone chest X-ray in the past three months,” said Marlene Pelayo of the Human Resources Management and Development Office.

The activity is part of the commitment by Philippine British Assurance Company, Inc. (PBACI) as the chosen health insurance company of the city.

PBACI brought its own teams of medical technologists along with four doctors and four nurses to handle the entire duration of the examinations.

This year’s medical-physical tests will address the health concerns of about 1,377 employees.

The examination results will be the basis for health and wellness interventions as advised by physicians and experts. The interventions include free additional consultation and medicine.  (Gensan CPIO/Sharmagne Villacastin)

CDRRMC trains barangays for disaster response

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (24 March 2015) – The Integrated Barangay Affairs and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) have conducted a Rapid Community Response Program (RCRP) to train barangay volunteers for calamity preparedness.

The RCRP was a two-day training-workshop implemented by the city government to equip residents of different barangays with the basics of disaster preparedness and mitigation skills.

The participating barangays were Baluan, Fatima, Lagao, San Isidro, San Jose and Sinawal.

CDRRMC action officer Bong Dacera handled the seminar and introduced the volunteers to the plausible hazards their respective barangays are prone to.

He also taught them how the CDRRMO analyzes community risk assessment and tools for hazard assessment.

A simulation drill was set on March 21 after the one-week planning.

“After the two-day classroom seminar, they will go down to the purok level and facilitate community organizing,” said Dacera.

“We give them one week to plan, and then the following week is the drill simulation of the first batch,” he added.

The RCRP is also part of the advocacy of City Mayor Ronnel Rivera to attain environmental security and rehabilitation through disaster risk resilience.

The city mayor plans to make the activity regular in order to empower barangays in times of disaster or emergency. (Gensan CPIO/ Sharmagne Villacastin)

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (24 March 2015) -  City Mayor Ronnel Rivera has conducted a Barangayan in Bawing in the presence of City Hall department heads and barangay officials to listen to and provide solution to existing problems in the area.

One of the major concerns - the increasing number of children who have no natal registration - was addressed by the Local Civil Registrar through the free processing and distribution of birth certificates during the same day.

The City Engineer's Office (CEO) assured Barangay Captain Jerry Jugarap that it will act on the latter's request to repair damaged roads in Bawing.

“We have three dump trucks as promised to the barangay. The repair will start by the second week of March," said Engr. Kits Provido, CEO head.

Provido also announced that the LED street lighting from airport to Bawing is expected to be installed on the third quarter of the year.

He added that the street lighting of the inner roads of the barangay is now being proposed through the Barangay Electrification Program amounting to P5 million.

Other concerns such as electrification, drainage, and additional livelihood programs were being taken into account by the department heads.

Immediate government services were also rendered to the residents of Bawing during the Barangayan such as free medical checkup and feeding program for malnourished children.

Mayor Rivera said the Barangayan is a program initiated by the Integrated Barangay Affairs to bring government services closer to the constituents of the city. (Gensan CPIO/ Gelay Himbing)

SoEnergy donates streetlights

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (9 March 2015) – Five streetlights were donated by the SoEnergy International to lighten up one of the dim streets in Barangay Apopong.

SoEnergy, one of the power distributors of Gensan operating in Apopong, installed five streetlights in Olaer Road in the wake of requests by residents to illuminate the area to deter crimes.

“As part of our corporate social responsibility,” said SoEnergy operations head Yesid Figueroa, “we have to make the communities—in where we operate—better.”

“It is not all about the profit,” Figueroa added.

City Mayor Ronnel Rivera, during the ceremonial lighting on March 4, said the city government will pay the bill of these streetlights.

The mayor said that with the help of SOCOTECO, the installation of these streetlights was hastened and the maintenance will be the responsibility of SOCOTECO and City Engineer’s Office (CEO).

“We will do our best to make the lives of our constituents better. We will form strong Public-Private Partnerships in order to build more projects that would benefit the city,” Mayor Rivera said.

Each of the streetlights cost around P20,000.

CEO head Francisco Provido disclosed that the city has still inadequacy of streetlights.

“In our study, we have assessed that the city is still in need of approximately 2,000 streetlights. We are trying our best, together with the mayor to fill these gaps,” Provido said.

Recently, 719 streetlights were erected by the partnership of Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), LGU Gensan, and SOCOTECO in the junctions of DARBCI-Hadano, Hadano-Makar, Lagao-Katangawan, and Lagao-Buayan.

These streetlights, together with their components, were funded by the LGU Gensan, at a cost of around P33 million.

The stretch of Batomelong to Tinagacan will be the next area to be illuminated according to the CEO head.

Mayor Rivera indicated that inner roads, as well as the barangay streets, would soon have streetlights.

“I want the entire Gensan to be bright. This would help us to prevent crimes and make our constituents feel safe at night,” the mayor said. (Gensan CPIO/ Ian John Lagare)

SOCOTECO II: Power supply in Gensan stable

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (9 March 2015) – SOCOTECO II acting head Crisanto Sotelo said on Wednesday (March 4) that Gensan has enough power supply for 2015 that would put rotational brownouts common during the summer period a thing of the past.

Sotelo disclosed the current maximum load needed by Gensan is around 130MW. He confidently conveyed that through the contracts they have with different power distributors, the city would not experience power shortages.

Even with the closure of the two power plants of the STEAG State Power Inc. Empowering Mindanao last February, the power supply of the city remains stable largely because of South Cotabato II Electric Cooperative's (SOCOTECO II) venture with other energy companies.

STEAG used to supply 25MW to Gensan.

As of now, Gensan receives power supply from SoEnergy International, Peakpower Inc., Mapalad Power Corporation, Therma Marine Inc. and the National Power Corporation.

SoEnergy and PeakPower are both Gensan-based generating 15MW and 20MW power supply, respectively.

Sotelo also bared that SOCOTECO has already made a contract with the Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC) currently being constructed in Maasim, Sarangani Province.

Sotelo said SEC would be fully operational by late 2015 or early 2016. When that time comes, Gensan will secure 70MW power from the said power distributor.

“Right now, the biggest threat in our power supply not only for Gensan but in the entire country as well, is the El Nino. We have to prepare for it and mitigate its effects,” Sotelo said.

He also commended City Mayor Ronnel Rivera for the strong partnership he made between the city government and SOCOTECO II.

“We are really thankful that Mayor Rivera is really coordinating with us when it comes to the power issues of the city,” Sotelo said.

As part of his thrust to make Gensan as a booming business beacon of SOCSKSARGEN region, Mayor Rivera is constantly emphasizing the crucial role of power in making this pursuit possible.

“We cannot attract investors if we cannot guarantee sufficient power supply from them. Businesses cannot smoothly operate with the presence of energy shortages. This is the reason why we work hand-in-hand with SOCOTECO to find solutions to the problems, to have a sustainable energy here in Gensan,” Mayor Rivera emphasized. (Gensan CPIO/ Ian John M. Lagare)

DA, Sen. Villar give equipment to Gensan farmers

TUPI, South Cotabato (9 March 2015) – The Department of Agriculture (DA), with counterpart from the city government, has given post-harvest facilities to several farming cooperatives in Gensan.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala and Senator Cynthia Villar initiated the turnover of farming machines, post-harvest facilities, and project funds - amounting to almost P1 billion - for Gensan and other local government units in SOCSKSARGEN on March 3 at DA Research Center in Bololmala, Tupi.
For Gensan, the DA gave two corn mills, two corn shellers and one floating tiller with a total cost of around P1 million. The LGU Gensan has a 15% counterpart per project component.

Aside from that, a certificate of completion of the Fatima-to-San Jose farm-to-market-road (FMR) costing P10 million was also given to Gensan City Mayor Ronnel Rivera.

DA is also funding the on-going construction of an FMR in Barangay San Jose.

Senator Villar, during the activity, said that they gave these projects to Gensan to support its pursuit to become the agro-industrial hub of the SOCSKSARGEN region.

“I met Mayor Rivera several times in the past already—during different national conventions held in Gensan. He always conveys how he wants to develop Gensan into an agro-industrial hub that’s why we (with DA) want to help him,” Villar said.

Villar described Mayor Rivera as “my favorite mayor.”

When Mayor Rivera was elected as local chief executive of Gensan last 2013, he benchmarked various initiatives to develop the agricultural sector of the city.

Among these was the pursuit of the construction of an Integrated Food Terminal (IFT) for centralized trade, farm-to-market roads, and other agricultural support facilities.

He is also pushing for the refurbishment of the General Santos City Public Market through Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

For the past few years, the local government of Gensan has forged strong linkage with DA that highlighted Gensan’s capacity to become an agricultural hub.

The 23rd National Hog Convention, First National Dairy Congress, and some other agricultural conventions have been held in Gensan for the past year and a half—proving that Gensan is gaining ground as an agricultural city.

Mayor Rivera also highlights his interest for Gensan to be a major producer of crops, mango, and dairy.

Recently, it was known that General Santos City, aside from being the “Tuna Capital of the Philippines”, is now a key exporter of hogs to various regions in the country.

According to Dave Arreglado, LGU Gensan executive assistant on investment and tourism, Regions 3 to 11 are now getting their pork supply from this city.

“Ninety percent of our swine products are being shipped to other regions; only 10% remain here for consumption. Unlike Cebu and other cities, 100% of their production is just for local consumption only,” Arreglado said.

Mayor Rivera said that he will continue his effort to develop and diversify Gensan’s economy—not just reliant on the fishing industry.

“We are stepping up to become more than just the Tuna Capital of the Philippines. I want Gensan to become a beacon of investment and opportunities that is why we are working hard to achieve this,” Mayor Rivera emphasized. (Gensan CPIO/Ian John M. Lagare)

Chambers of Commerce, LGU-GSC donate 6 classrooms

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (9 March 2015) – Three secondary schools in the city have each became the recipients of two-classroom buildings.

Thanks to the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Inc. (FFCCCII), South Cotabato Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (SCFCCCII) and the local government unit of General Santos City (LGU-GSC).

The fully furnished classrooms were successively turned over to General Santos City National High School (GSCNHS), North High School, and General Santos National School of Arts and Trades (GSNSAT) on February 28.

Each classroom also came with 50 plastic mono-block chairs.

Alfonso Sy, president of the FFCCCII, who was present in all turnover ceremonies, said that they are glad to help the local government, especially in its advocacy to provide quality education.

It was City Mayor Ronnel Rivera’s initiative to ask FFCCCII and SCFCCCII if they can donate classrooms in the city.

Last July 2014, the mayor’s request was granted by these Filipino-Chinese businessmen through a signing of Memorandum of Agreement that took place at Greenleaf Hotel.

Each of the classroom buildings cost around P800,000. The LGU-GSC gave a counterpart of P400,000.

When Mayor Rivera assumed office in 2013, he acknowledged the insufficiency of classrooms, chairs, and other facilities in the city’s public schools.

“I know that our public schools are really needy despite the effort of the Department of Education (DepEd) to sustain the inadequacies,” Mayor Rivera said.

“That is why I made sure that the local government of Gensan will be the prime partner of DepEd so that we can give quality education to our children,” the mayor added.

Data from DepEd Gensan shows that the city’s public schools have 340 classrooms and 14,000 armchairs shortages.

Mayor Rivera, in his personal initiative, has donated 7,000 armchairs and targets to increase the number to 12,000 with the help of some private companies.

DepEd Gensan Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Gildo Mosqueda expressed his gratitude to Mayor Rivera for prioritizing the needs of the educational system of the city.

“We are always thankful to the support Mayor Rivera and the local government of Gensan gave to DepEd. I personally admit that we cannot do it alone. That is the reason we need these kinds of partnership to strengthen the academic standards of Gensan,” Mosqueda said.

Mosqueda promised to do DepEd’s part in implementing quality education in the schools of Gensan. (Gensan CPIO/ Ian John Lagare)

Pioneer settlers acknowledged in Kalilangan 2015

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (28 February 2015) - History in Gensan, unlike any other city in the Philippines, has been formed through the courage of its pioneers.

Kalilangan 2015, with its theme “Kalilangan: Ano Ang K Mo?”, reached back to the origins of the city through the help of the scions of Gensan’s pioneers.

These pioneers were headed by General Paulino Santos who arrived in these shores on February 27, 1939 through the boat M.V. Basilan. The National Land Settlement Administration was the mandate that made these pioneers from the northern region of the archipelago to settle in Mindanao.

These forerunners are long gone by now. However, their descendants are still alive and are very active in every activity the city has—especially those who are akin to culture and history.

Collectively known as the “Sons and Daughters of General Santos Pioneers”, they are the remnants—mostly grandchildren—of the first to settle here in Gensan.

This Kalilangan 2015, City Mayor Ronnel Rivera put them into the spotlight as well as let them organize a couple of activities that would help weave and piece back the past and its connection to the present.

Among these are the painting exhibit inside the City Hall by Amado Munda (grandson of Gen. Paulino Santos), the photo exhibit in the ground floor of KCC Veranza, and the Parada ng Lahi on February 27.

“We have to pay our respects to our forefathers and those who came before us. They gave birth to Gensan and cultivated it soils and we are really thankful for that,” Mayor Rivera said.

He also recognized the importance of these pioneers through inducting the set of officers of the Sons and Daughters of General Santos Pioneers at KCC Veranza on Febrary 24.

The chosen president is William Benigno Aquino.

In their ingenuity and care for the history of the city, members of the group have consolidated their resources and wrote a book entitled “General Paulino Santos: His Journey To History”.

Copies of the book have already been handed to Department of Education General Santos City and to be distributed to the different schools of the city.

As for the mayor, this initiative is already a big help for educating the children of the city.

“We need to teach our children our history so that they won’t lose track on the history of our city,” the mayor explained. (Gensan CPIO/ Ian John M. Lagare)

P8-M Court Archive Building to rise in Gensan

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (28 February 2015) – Archived legal documents at the General Santos City Hall of Justice will soon be properly housed.

The city government through its partnership with the judicial branch is set to build an archive building at the Integrated Bar of the Philippines compound  near the Hall of Justice in Barangay Lagao.

The Court Archive Building's estimated cost is around P8 million.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday (February 26) led by City Mayor Ronnel Rivera., Supreme Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez and Deputy Court Administrator Thelma Bahian.

Mayor Rivera, in an interview, said that he immediately looked at the situation of the justice system of the city when he sat down as the local chief executive last 2013.

“I know the courts here in Gensan really need support so that they can dispense the justice system fast and accordingly. It is one of their requests to have an archive building that’s why I did my best, with the help of the Sangguniang Panglungsod to make it possible,” Mayor Rivera said.

The mayor said he also increased the allowances received by the judges, prosecutors, and lawyers under the Public Attorney’s Office.

Marquez expressed his delight for the overwhelming support the city government of Gensan is giving for the courts.

“It is not very often that we have an LGU which is very supportive to our courts. That is one reason why upon being informed that we will be very fortunate today to witness this capsule laying, I actually have to drop everything and change my schedule so I could be here with you,” Marquez said.

“Because I believe that more than anything else, it is actually the symbolic partnership of the local government unit (LGU) and the courts should be recognized,” the Supreme Court administrator said.

He explained that the courts are important components of local government and that there are no successful LGUs without the support of the judicial system.

“Normally, I go to different cities and talk to the mayors to ask support for our courts, but here in Gensan, I didn’t have to do that; the mayor already gave his support,” Marquez bared.

“I think the last time I expressed my appreciation to a mayor was in Manila. In Mindanao, this is my first time,” he pointed out.

Marquez assured that the judicial process here in Gensan would be much faster and efficient.  Along that line, he also divulged that Gensan would be one of the first recipients of their “E-court” software currently being developed.  (Gensan CPIO/ Ian John Lagare)

City government helps relocated families

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (28 February 2015) - The 38 families relocated from their coastal residence in Purok Tinago, Barangay South due to coastal erosion received assistance from the city government on February 25.

City Mayor Ronnel Rivera, accompanied by the City Housing and Land Management Office, City Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office, and City Social Welfare and Development Office, went to Promise Land—a relocation site in Barangay Mabuhay—and distributed aid to the affected families.

The assistance from City Hall came in the form of "family packs” consisting of basic commodities such as 10-kilos of rice, canned goods, basin, kitchen utensils, and clothes.

Arsenia Agraviador, one of the beneficiaries, expressed her delight for “rescuing them” from imminent danger and providing for their basic needs.

“We were so afraid when the soil underwater was devoured. I thought first that it was a sinkhole, but it was even more dangerous. I really thank the local government for caring for us,” Agraviador said.

The same sentiment was also expressed by other residents who were relocated from Tinago, now a no-build zone.

The city government has been coordinating with the Department of Social Welfare and Development so that these affected families can avail of the Core Shelter Assistance Project.

Gawad Kalinga also indicated willingness to help these families build more decent homes.
The 38 families were prioritized to be relocated first because they were living very close to the shoreline.

The remaining 1,000 families living in Tinago will be relocated in a three-hectare relocation site in Lanton, Barangay Apopong.

“I want everyone to be safe that is why I ordered a forced evacuation. If some will not heed our warnings, then we will give a waiver that the local government will not be responsible if something will happen to them,” Mayor Rivera explained. “But of course, I am not heartless that is why I still plead for them to voluntarily evacuate.” (Gensan CPIO/ Ian John M. Sanchez Peak: Gensan’s highest spot

By Ian John M. Lagare
Photos by Cocoy Sexcion for Gensan CPIO

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (27 February 2015) - Gensan has been growing progressively with new businesses that are giving economic drive for the city.

The “Tuna Capital of the Philippines” has become a magnet for many people, investments, and opportunities.
These changes are rebranding General Santos into a highly-urbanized city. Because of the fast and constant progress, reaching that stage is inevitable.

Being the beacon for investment and the hub for products and services coming from the entire Region 12, Gensan’s current state is perfect for these opportunities.

Despite all of these, Gensan has never lost its taste for tourism and adventure. In fact, some of the best trail and climbs can be found in the city or its vicinities. Don’t be a stranger. Explore General Santos City.Start with Sanchez Peak, the highest point in the city. Rising about 800 feet above sea level, the Sanchez Peak offers a lofty and relaxing view of Gensan without even leaving the city.

Sanchez Peak offers 360 degrees view of some diverse natural attractions that are surrounding Gensan. You have an unobstructed view of Mt. Matutum, Mt. Parker, Sarangani Bay, and some lower mountain ridges that surround General Santos City.  Municipalities of Alabel, Malapatan, and the town of Polomolok are also visible up here.

Sanchez Peak is located within the boundaries of Conel and Olympog, one of the few rural barangays in Gensan whose economy is primarily farming and other agricultural works. Residents here are very cordial and friendly; they will greet you with their signature, genuine Filipino smiles if ever you cross paths with them.
There are two trails going up to Sanchez Peak: One is in Purok Balakayo in Barangay Conel and the other one—almost adjacent to the former—is the Purok Balsinang in Barangay Olympog.

For starters, mountaineering experts would often suggest the Balsinang route. Even the pass’ terrain is steep, rocky, and ascending. The Balsinang entry is favorable because it has huge trees to shade you from the heat of the sun.

Although not passable by any type of vehicle, the said route offers a good view of Gensan and nearby areas while trekking it. Beginners are also recommended to take Balsinang to practice their strength and stamina.
Although the Balakayo route is passable by motorcycles or “habal-habal”, it is an open canopy area. That means that the pass has almost no trees to shield you from the sun.

Another uncommon route to Sanchez Peak can be found in nearby Polomolok, which is behind the Olympog-Conel Mountain Ranges.Experienced mountaineers can traverse the Balsinang Route towards Sanchez Peak in less than an hour. But if you are climbing the peak for relaxation and leisure, you can pound the trail at your own pace.

Take a rest under the tall coconut trees, drop your bags, and savor the cool, breezy air the place has to offer.
Of course, you have to travel equipped with necessary mountaineering gears: tents, trekking apparels, water and liquid dehydrators, and food.

The secret to Sanchez Peak’s serenity and peace is found in the idea that it is considered a hermit’s place -a beautiful place devoid of the most common of amenities but where nature and man can come to silently meet and reorient themselves with one another.

The most suitable time to ascend is early morning, around 6-7am and mid-afternoon, 3-4pm, when there is a lesser battle with the scorching heat.

When you reach the top, everything is silent except for the strong gushes of the wind.
Why fly to Tagaytay or Baguio if you want to experience windy zephyrs and cool breezes? Sanchez Peak can offer that at a minimal expense.

When you want a heavy meal, you can have an order of a whole native chicken—cooked whatever way you want—for only P250/kilo care off Manong Jun and Mising Sanchez - owners of Sanchez Peak.
If you think you’re an experienced chef and confident in your cooking skills, you can buy the whole chicken at P180 per kilo.

Manong Jun and Manang Mising also own a small, stand-alone store in Sanchez Peak where you can buy snacks and food. Eating while bonding with friends and families is the perfect way to pass a day here in Sanchez Peak. Holding a cup of coffee while enjoying the grandeur of nature is the perfect way to expunge all your stress and travails.

Getting along with other hikers is also a nice thing to do. Up here, every individual has no trace of nuances.
And in the stark height of Sanchez Peak, one of the best delights you can have is witnessing the gradual glowing of the city lights as the night takes over.

The streetlights shine like a million stars that illuminate the city of Gensan. A romantic, gleaming testament that Gensan —throughout the years – has changed and improved.

Leana Margarita Nitafan Diaz, a regular trekker of Sanchez Peak, brought her friends to hike with her.
“It was a really nice experience to hike here. Even if it is just my fourth time here, everything seems new,” Diaz said.

“I brought my friends here so that they can experience Sanchez Peak. I want to show them that  the adage ‘no pain, no glory’ is true,” Diaz said.

For her friends, going to Sanchez Peak have given them the chance of tasting the best native chicken delicacies. For other hikers, it means quenching their thirst with the coldest and “most delicious” water they have ever tasted.

In the opinion of Manong Jun and Manang Mising, going to Sanchez Peak is the perfect thrill and adventure for city folk who love nature.

“Many hikers are going here just to seek nature adventure. During holidays, summer breaks, and vacation, a quite number of people are going here for short excursion and voyage,” Manong Jun said.
“In peak days, the number of hikers staying overnight here could reach 250-300,” he added.

Manong Jun and Manang Mising oversee the maintenance and cleanliness of Sanchez Peak. Not business-minded in nature, they just want to take care of their precious property. They are also encouraging visitors to help them take care of the trails and the area. As they say in the mountaineering and trekking lingo, “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints and bring home nothing but memories.”

“Sanchez Peak is a land given by the native Blaans here to my father. It is a proof of their camaraderie and friendship,” Manong Jun said.

Celebrations like Kalilangan can highlight Sanchez Peak as a piece of culture and history. Bonds and friendship between the Christians and Blaans were formed here.

“Now, we are trying to preserve the neatness of the place; we always check the surroundings to pick dirt and garbage,” Jun followed.

“We are also seeking the help of the local government unit of General Santos City for the maintenance of Sanchez Peak.“Of course, this (Sanchez) peak is the only treasure we can hand down to our children,” Manong Jun stated. City Mayor Ronnel Rivera has already expressed his support in promoting Sanchez Peak as a tourist destination.

“Not all urbanized cities have this kind of landmark. Sanchez Peak is unique because the adventure and the nature that some people are just inside the city. In some other places, you have to go outside the city and spend more money just to experience an adventure like Sanchez Peak,” Mayor Rivera said.
“This is the reason why we are trying to preserve the environment of and around the Sanchez Peak with the help of CENRO and Waste Management Office,” he added.

Currently, boosting Sanchez Peak’s image to become a prime tourist destination is not being taken for granted. And as for every General or residents of Gensan: don’t be strangers in your land. Don’t leave and explore other places without even visiting the bounties teeming in Gensan.
