GENERAL SANTOS CITY (24 March 2015) – Women received free services during the Women's Month Celebration at the Oval Gymnasium.
The services, which included free pap smear, body mass index computation, free haircut, blood pressure taking, and legal consultation, were rendered by the city government and companies participating in the celebration.
Cristina Caparos, one of the women volunteers who offered free haircut service, said “women empowerment is being able to help your fellow women achieve beauty even in a simple way.”
“Hearing thank you from them made me feel my worth as a woman also,” she added.
The Women's Month which is celebrated every March is anchored on the International Women's Day Celebration. This event is to recognize women’s empowerment and their recognized role now in the society.
The City Population Management Office (CPMO) is the lead department for this event. They are partnered with the City Social Welfare and Development Office and other national offices.
Judith Janiola, acting department head of the CPMO, tapped the participation of the various women’s federation of the city to represent each of the 26 barangays where they belong.
“There was an overwhelming attendance from different barangays through the women federation in this celebration. This is the biggest attendance we had so far,” Janiola said.
“Women must be empowered especially in decision-making, as the battle cry of our theme dictates. We do not limit only for women’s concerns but so equally with men,” she added.
Meanwhile, City Mayor Ronnel Rivera already mandated the CPMO to pursue the formulation of gender and development policies.
"In this way," Mayor Rivera said, "we can uphold the welfare of women and other vulnerable sectors of the city."
