GENERAL SANTOS CITY (04 August 2013) - City Mayor Ronnel Rivera has spearheaded the consolidation of different children’s rights and welfare councils through the Local Council for the Protection of Children (LCPC) .
Representatives from local government units (LGU), barangay units and non-government organizations (NGOs) met with the mayor and members of the LCPC July 31 to pave the way for the implementation of Social Protection Policy for Children (SPPC) in the city.
As chair of LCPC, Rivera emphasized that the direction of his administration especially in this project should always be in accordance with the protection of children’s welfare and rights.
The SPPC basically aims to synchronize every local sector functions to advocate children’s welfare.
It was designed to promote children’s protection, survival, participation and developmental aspects in a given locality.
On the other hand, LCPC’s objective is to strengthen the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children (BCPCs) in their compliance and implementation of the SPPC in their areas.
According to Rebecca Magante, chief of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, the BCPC is directly under the LCPC of General Santos City and is tasked with the execution of programs and settings of guidelines aligned with child welfare in the barangay level.
While the LCPC is monitored by the Department of Interior and Local Government in its promulgation of policies and projects; and the City Fiscal’s Office and the Philippine National Police handles the legal aspect of the project.
