40-hectare land set aside for informal settlers by LGU-GenSan

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (23 September 2013) - The local government of General Santos City under the leadership of Mayor Ronnel Rivera bared the procurement of a 40-hectare land in Barangay Bawing that will be utilized for socialized housing and relocation in response to the issue of informal settlers in the city.

Mary Ann Bacar, City Housing and Land Management Office (CHLMO) chief, said that the securing of the lot is just one of the many projects of the same nature that is currently in the pipeline.

Mayor Rivera for his part already asked the Mindanao State University – Gen. Santos City for help in preparing a study to identify which families are qualified to be relocated there.

“I want Generals to be prioritized in the relocation,” Rivera added.

The statement comes after the mayor said that residents from nearby municipalities and provinces have manifested their desire to be shortlisted as among the relocation beneficiaries.

The planned 40-hectare socialized housing in Barangay Bawing came to light amidst the meeting of the city officials and local barangay leaders in Calumpang led by Captain Reynaldo Salubre as part of the weekly Barangayan.

Formerly known as “City Hall sa Barangay”, the “Barangayan” is a modified initiative by Mayor Rivera to bring the city government services closer to the people.

The program has become an opportunity for the people to avail government services like free medical treatment, housing registration, job hiring and legal consultations among others. (GENSAN INFO OFFICE/Ian John Lagare)
