GENERAL SANTOS CITY (23 September 2013) – General Santos City’s first couple Mayor Ronnel Rivera and his wife Jane Rivera personally led the “Kasalan sa Barangay” held at Barangay San Jose last Tuesday (September 17).
Twenty-one (21) newlyweds from the said barangay were formally wed by the mayor. His wife along with other local officials served as guests.
In his message to the newlyweds the mayor emphasized the importance of responsibly rearing a family and treating marriage as the foundation of the family; and an inviolable social institution.
Rivera also reminded the couples that now that they are legally married, they are qualified for social services that offered exclusively for married couples.
An example of these according to Rivera is Phil. Health Benefits for married individuals that would include the couple’s offspring as beneficiaries.
The mayor also addressed the crowd saying that his wife’s “rare appearance” was a show of support and as an example to what a strong marriage can help a man achieve.
Mayor Rivera and his wife have been married for 15 years and have four children.
The couple also emphasized their advocacy regarding family welfare saying that family should always come first.
The mayor also reminded the men of their responsibility to their wife and children as well as the role of equality among husband and wife.
In the same event, Judith Saniola of the City Population Management Office (CPMO) said that in the first three months of 2013, the city recorded around 200 to 300 marriages. This is good according to her, considering the number of births registered in the city per year.
The civil wedding was organized by Local Civil Registry (LCR) headed by Isabela Tablizo in close coordination with the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) and CPMO. (GENSAN INFO OFFICE/Ian John Lagare)
