Mayor Rivera helps resolve employment row

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (9 October 2013) - City Mayor Ronnel Rivera helped resolve an employment dispute between 35 employees and their employer Citra Mina Seafood Corporation.

The 35 displaced workers were given emergency employment by the Department of Labor and Employment Region 12 (DOLE 12) in coordination with the National Coordinating and Monitoring Board 12 (NCMB 12).

Director Ofelia Domingo of DOLE 12 said the displaced employees will be granted emergency employment with salary for 10 days on the condition that the workers will not stage a labor strike against Citra Mina.

According to the local government unit, this will give the authorities time to look for a solution that is mutually acceptable to both parties.

Domingo added that the emergency employment was initially planned to begin on October 24 but was moved to November 6. DOLE Region 12, the city government and the union of workers have agreed on the finalized mechanics of deployment for the assistance.

Wages of the workers would be shouldered by DOLE 12.

Prior to emergency employment, more than 100 employees have been dismissed by the Citra Mina Sea Food Corporation due to the alleged change of product line by the corporation.

Out of the hundred employees, 35 of them have refused to receive the separation benefits offered by Citra Mina, while they have a pending notice of strike with the NCMB.

Aside from the emergency employment, the DOLE 12 has also offered a Pangkabuhayan Starter Kit to each of the workers with a minimum fund of P5, 000 for any livelihood proposal they can come up with. (GENSAN INFO OFFICE/Ian John Lagare)
